22. Surfboarding Shark — Surf’s Up! Looking for some tasty waves and surfer-friendly paradise? Grab your board and head for Costa Rica. With huge, fast, reef breaks on the Caribbean and year-round, kilometer-long breaks on the Pacific; Costa Rica has waves for every type of surfer. Although it is one of the best places to surf in the world, the crowds are small and the locals greet you with, “Pura Vida!” It means “pure life” and has become commonly associated with Costa Rica and its laidback and friendly attitude. The term seems to have originated from the interaction between surfers and the locals in the 1950’s. Active volcanoes, white water rafting, monkeys, canopy tours, snorkeling, mountain biking, windsurfing, sailing, eco-minded culture and great food also add to Costa Rica’s allure for surfers.
