30. Pirates — Did you know that much of the coast of the Osa looks just like it did over 300 years ago when pirates such as Henry Morgan, Sir Francis Drake and William Dampier sailed alongside it? Legend says the people of Panama City hid hundreds of tons of treasure in the hills of Costa Rica’s Pacific coast in 1670 when Henry Morgan threatened to attack the city. A year later, Morgan sacked Panama City in one of the most notorious acts of piracy ever. Even though Panama City was the richest city in Central America at that time, Morgan was deprived of most of the riches that may still be hidden amongst Costa Rica’s lush rainforests on the Pacific coast. Pirate John Clipperton was so convinced the gold was hidden there, he lived among the native people and searched for years without success. Maybe we’ll find it!!!
