19. Gator — Did you know that the American Alligator is found only in the U.S. and is one of the largest reptiles on earth? Reaching lengths up to 18 feet, they can weigh up to 500 pounds! The only other country that has alligators is China. The Chinese gator is found in the Yangtze River and is much smaller (up to six feet) than the American. While conservation efforts in the U.S. have kept the alligator off the endangered list, the few hundred remaining Chinese alligators are facing extinction. Costa Rica and other Latin American countries have Caiman crocodiles which are smaller than alligators. Both are threatened by water pollution and habitat loss.
