20. American Spirit — The bald eagle is really all American - it is the only eagle unique to North America. This bird of prey became the U. S. national emblem on June 20, 1782. With its brown body and white head and a wingspan of six to eight feet in length, the bald eagle’s keen eyesight is eight times more powerful than yours or mine! The bald eagle was on the brink of extinction in the late 20th century, but is now stable and was removed from the U.S. federal government's list of endangered species. Hooray!
